The adventurers cautiously explore amongst the ruins. One of them signals that they have found what looks like an underground entrance, but at that moment a sound in the wood startles not just the wildlife...
There is a lot to focus on in this piece. By facing the figures the same way, and by trying to create a flow of lines with the weaponry, I was aiming to pull the viewers eye across the page towards the entrance and wildlife. The low POV hopefully also adds to the tension of the scene.
Is that Lidda making a return appearance? lol. As always, great art.
I can't say I approve of what they've done with the gnome and the tiefling, I think simplifying the rules was enough work to appeal to a broader fanbase without selling out, but that really has nothing to do with your art, which is amazing. I'm especially fond of the outfit on the elf.
I'll just miss the days when tieflings were a rarity, a subrace of rejects, marked by slight flaws showing their ancestry, as opposed to somehow openly accepted, markedly demonic half fiends running rampant through the world.
I suppose you can't throw the baby out with the bathwater though. The mechanics work better now, so maybe those of us who happened to like the spirit of what a D&D world has been like since the 1970's can just use the new mechanics with the old race and monster definitions. In the end, I suppose it's all fluff anyway.
I really should stop ranting on your picture though, it's awesome.
Even if I can't support what that Tiefling represents, it looks kickass
