"A beauty glimpsed from afar is beauty still.'

This was my first exploration of painting in oils. I was excited by the process, and especially enjoyed the energy that I could get into the rendering of the clouds, and texture of the treees.

I am certainly inspired to create more pieces the same way.

Wow!!! I've saw your gallery and I'm so glad to see this piece because you can tell how far you have gone and also it gave me hope because recently I've finished my first oil painting and gave me headaches, lol. But will work on the second one tomorrow. I'll post 1 at least every week for practicing and get better and do a fan art and my own concept with people/animals and more. Keep up the great job and thanks for the inspiration ;)

Love this series Ralph. The brushwork is energetic but it so very restful to look at... and then there's a dragon.

Nice work! The composition and color drew me to clink on the painting. Glad you took the plunge into oils. One thing about oils is you need to use much more paint and a good painting medium. You might try a gel medium like Neo Megilp from Gamblin, it's the one I use. You might find it easier if you paint your darks first, then mid-tones saving your lights for last. Keep your early passages thin adding heavier paint in the lighter passages.

By the way, you have it listed as acrylic on illustration board instead of oil on what looks like canvas or canvas paper?

Cheers,

David

I'm assuming you either use Neo Megilp or have used it before so I have a couple of questions for you. I have used Liquin almost exclusively since I began oil painting and I'm looking for a safer alternative (Liquin is VERY TOXIC) and from what I gather online, Neo Megilp is pretty awesome. Have you used Liquin before? How does it compare with Neo Megilp? Faster drying? Yellowing? How's the consistency with paint?

I tried Liquin and found it too stiff and sticky like using honey or something. I was trained using Maroger which is a gel medium often called Megilp. The Neo Megilp works very much like the original yet has some significant advantages. If you paint in thin layers, it can dry overnight so you can continue painting. It is much clearer than Maroger and I don't think it will yellow with time. You can 'reactivate' it to lengthen your painting time up to 8 hours or so yet it sets up about as fast as Maroger. About an hour or so into the painting you earlier work begins to tack up. Excellent for Ala Prima. The best part is it paints like Maroger imparting the same buttery paint quality and workability. If you use a brush properly, it gives you incredible control; great stuff.

Cheers,

David
