Ahjuutal Rising

Acrylic, approx 7" x 10"

D&D Forgotten Realms, Ancient Empires ; internal illustration
©Wizards of the Coast,

Original artwork sold.

A once might city is lost beneath the waves, but one day it is said it will rise again...

Meanwhile adventurers are drawn to it's ruins, and the treasures that are supposedly lost beneath the waves.

In this painting I tried to distinguish between the watery realm, and that above, by strong palette, and value differences. I also tried to add a bit of distortion into the straight lines of the submerged buildings to give that impression of wavy lines that you get when looking through water.

This is a more pastoral piece for me, but I still maanged to sneak a few things in amongst the ruins.

Wow! I really like this. It's so detailed and intricate, and the angle is really interesting too. I love it when acrylic pieces look like this.

It is beautiful, I keep fighting the urge to grab a magnifying glass and look for more detail. I love the octopus lurking in the dark, waiting for the treasure hunters to try their luck. And yet it is so serene and peaceful.

Nice!

Mind you, I'm never gonna be able to think of sunken cities rising without a reminiscent grin since reading Terry Pratchett's JINGO, which combines a classic sunken city with its cyclopean architecture, the medival legend of a floating/sinking island, AND a spoof of both British colonialism in the Middle East and their nationwide jingoism during both World Wars.

Oh, and the rain of fish.

Tinned fish.
