Beyond the Vault of Souls

Pathfinder module artwork.
© Paizo; Pathfinder.

Acrylic, Approx 13" x 16.5".

Original artwork for sale; UK£1300.

The demonic Glabrezu tears the armour from the helpless warrior as his companions magic dissipates ineffectually against their foe!

Interlocking loosely formed triangles were used in constructing the composition. The foreground elements are within one which is anchored on the rocks and the demons head. The backgound has another 'V' created by the clouds, line of the wall, and angle of the magical blast, which help draw attention to the hole in the huge wall, and the demon perched within the breach.

The focus, and smallest triangle, is wizard to demon head to warrior and back to wizard, all accentuated by the stand-out saturated blue of the magic.

Details of the product, and the cover with full trade dress can be seen at:

Very very nice, must say that you inspire me to put away the Intous for a bit and pick up my dustcovered brushes again here... ;) Traditional art always seems to impress me more than digital, no undo buttons or layers... ;) How long does a piece like this take you from start to finish, and how do you scan it?

There are lots of lus sides to digital work, but I do like working at a drawing board, rather than straing at a monitor :)

A piece like this is about a week to paint and a day or two to sketch.

This is as always a great piece of artwork. I love this think you've made with the blue lightning to focus on the action. Our eye is clearly attracted to the center of the piece. I think you've really captured the climax of this epic fight.

Holy cow, two of my favorite demons in one picture, and they're schooling the good guys (I love Vrocks). As per usual, amazing work. You really are one of the new artists I like doing the new D&D.

Great piece Ralph, great palette and composition, love the action an dposes to the figures, strong.

Esp like the shredded armour and arrows falling from the quiver, these sorts of things really add weight and substance to the piece.

I am amazed by the level of thought and planning that goes into your work, I am lazy by comparison.

Ben, thanks for your comments. I do consider these things when i work on a composition, but can also be easier to see links and connections you made after you have finished.

I was sorry not to get a chat with you about McBride yesterday - but if you ever fancy a natter on Skype that'd be great - thanks :)

cool piece, love the action and composition. You allways come up with such strong compositions, whats your trick to that? Very strong emotions and actions in all the characters, and the colors that you use give it a dream like feeling it keeps you entranced in the scene you created.

I do spend a fair bit of time working out the composition as thumbnails first. If the basic structure isn't strong then the picture never can be.

Thnaks :)

Great piece, you've conveyed a wonderful feeling of despair for these hapless adventurers. Very well done. I'm not an artist, so the technical reasons for why it works escapes me, I just know it does.
