Gates of Neverdeath

Dungeons & Dragons cover artwork.
WOTC; D&D.

Acrylics, Approx 34" x 31"
Original artwork for sale.

"The Necromancer held the mighty crown aloft, with it's powers and his undead army he swore he'd be unstoppable..."

I have written an entry on my blog [link] detailing the creation of this painting, including preparatory sketches and the cover mockup.

I was asked to create an image that placed the viewer at the heart of the piece - as if they were being actively engaged by the undead. I chose a low viewpoint and forced perspective to emphasise the central viewing position as the focus of the piece.

In addition the majority of the painting has a limited palette, meaning that the Necromancer's red robes really pop and bring him into sharp focus.

It's interesting to see how you solve all of the problems and specified elements of an image like this; in particular the way you've made the painting make perfect sense, and work just as well, both in this composition and the vertical crop. And the necromancer really does pop! :meow:

Flawless technique and detail. Composition works great too. But there's one thing I'd like to point out, and that's the necromancer in the middle. It's clear he is the center of focus, but I'm having a hard time placing him in the distance. At first impression I thought he was toy small and the zombies were chasing after him.. :S which of course didn't make sense, and soon after saw it as it was... I think it's a contrast thing...
Still an amazing piece, of course.

Cheers

Wonderfully polished rendering and details. The rich textures add so much to the sense of decay and age. It would seem almost serene, if not for the fucking undead. Great piece!

Wow, that's really amazing, even for you! The detail in this is insane! (I'm also painting with acrylics, so I am impressed even more)
I also like the limited colour-range, it creates a great atmosphere!
