Gates of Neverdeath - Cover by RalphHorsley Gates of Neverdeath - Cover by RalphHorsley
Gates of Neverdeath

Dungeons & Dragons cover artwork.
© WOTC; D&D.

Acrylics, Approx 9" x 12"
Original artwork for sale.

"The Necromancer held the mighty crown aloft, with it's powers and his undead army he swore he'd be unstoppable..."

This image is a crop from the large, poster-sized, image I posted earlier in the week. I wanted to submit this piece as it shows how I intended the cover image to look. It should also enable you to more detail, especially in the Necromancer.

I have written an entry on my blog [link] detailing the creation of this painting, including preparatory sketches and the cover mockup.

I was asked to create an image that placed the viewer at the heart of the piece - as if they were being actively engaged by the undead. I chose a low viewpoint and forced perspective to emphasise the central viewing position as the focus of the piece.

In addition the majority of the painting has a limited palette, meaning that the Necromancer's red robes really pop and bring him into sharp focus.

I like your b&w sketch on the blog too. But you're right, with the coloring looks the necroman really amazing.
