Magic the Gathering; Eventide. ©Wizards of the Coast

Acrylic, Approx 11" x 7.5".

Original artwork for sale; UK£300.

The Faerie, enraged by the magics cast upon it, prepares to charge into combat upon its insect mount.

I wanted to show the rider and mount looking powerful, and about to attack. To show this I chose a viewpoint from below, which gives a greater sense of menace, and strength. I combined this with a light source from out of the frame, and focused the lance and stinger in the same direction. This gives the sense that something is about to happen there.

This is the third and final image I am posting in the Eventide set. There is also some information about it on the Wizards website, here:

Very nice. I love red and green in combination, so I got a weak spot for that :XD:

Oh fuck! Giant hymenopterans! Are the sting from these much worse then regular ones? I hope not, because I am allergic. =P

If you've ever got the time, d'ya reckon you could swing by my gallery? Although I've not uploaded for a while, I could really use some proper critique on some of my techniques and pictures... Cheers. :)

You clearly spend time on your pieces, as shown by the attention to detail, and the shading. What tends to let you down is your anatomy. Try using more photo reference, and work on this area :D keep working at it ;)

Very cool painting Ralph!! The lighting has worked great for enhancing its powerful look! And you had done a cool job on the fast movement of the wings!! Nice one! ;)

Thanks very much. I took a deep bretah, and paused before launching into the wings. That's the thing with acrylics- no going back ;)Glad they work for you.

Your totally right that's the scary thing about acrylics!! And you did an awesome job on the wings!! :D
I have not done any acrylics for a while I really should have another go just for fun. ;)
By the way I was just wondering what make/type of scanner do you use to get your cool paintings onto your computer? Just thinking of how big some of your paintings are and with all that lovely detail it would have to be a really good scanner!! Sorry to be so nosey lol... :boogie:

Rarely I will scan a painting in before going to the next stage. I figure I could always then do it digitally - but that has never happened, and ';painting over' with acrylics isn't too bad :)

I have had issues with scanners, a lot of them are rubbish, also getting big paintings scanned on an A4 scanner is a pain. Fortunately more A3 scanners are now available, and more affordable. I currently have a Plustek OpticPro A320, which was around £500, and worth every penny.

Ooh, great picture! The big and his faerie are pretty cool, and cute in a creepy kind of way! I like the shiny-ness in the bugs eyes and on his body.
