Hillcomber Giant

Magic the Gathering; Lorwyn. ©Wizards of the Coast

Acrylic, Approx 11" x 7.5".

Original artwork; SOLD

A delighted smile spreads across the Giant's face, as she examines a particular fine specimen of fossilised wood.

Conveying figure scale in landscape can be a challenge. With the Giant I used the device of including a prop, the goat, whose scale we are all familiar with.

To add to the mood, and sense of distance, I adopted a strong back light. Not only did this allow me to pick the figure out strongly, but also allowed the far horizon to fade into that same light.

Why the goat? It looks too small to be of any real use to her, even as a filling meal. Is it her pet?

How neat to see a female giant! Most pictures of giants that I see are male. I think it's because a lot of artists don't want to draw a woman who is large and not sexy, but that's dumb. It's a great painting!

So she's gathering fossilized wood? What for? Fuel is a crappy guess... I don't think fossilized trees would burn too well. Maybe for the production of armor or weapons.... Maybe magical implements?

I'm guessing the goat is a snack for later? :P

I just love how you've taken the time with each piece you've posted, to explain and elaborate upon the choices for composition and lighting and such. It's a thrill to read and watch. Thank you.

You're quite welcome. It's not every day that you see a smiling giant. It's like, "This is what we giants do when we're not terrorizing everyone."

awesome work, but i think the face would have worked better with more giantish features, if you nkow what i mean. however without them the mood of the character is well represented..!

I felt the features were reasonably 'giantish', bu ti also wanted to keep acertain femininity...

Hello mate.
Θα σου γράφω που και πού στην γλώσσα μου, έτσι για να σ' αφήσω να μαντεύεις.
Μην ανυσηχείς, είναι κυρίως θετικά σχόλια.
But can you guess what language ia am writing in?

Not exactly, and I would reply in Greek, but I have no Greek keys on the keyboard... I lived in Cyprus for 8 years, and went to local Greek speaking schools. I'm ashamed to say I do have a Cypriot accent ;)... Only when speaking Greek though, and I can force myself to try to avoid it.

But this is great practice, I've not spoken or read Greek in aaaages!
