Marauders of the Dune Sea

Dungeons & Dragons Dark Sun supplement cover artwork.
© WOTC; D&D.

Acrylic, Approx 13" x 17".

Original artwork for sale; UK£1700.

The denizens of this place are as mean as the barren landscape they inhabit....

It was great to be able to work on the DnD Dark Sun setting. The gameworld already has a strongly established heritage and is populated by some of the wierder, and fun, DnD creatures.

This Thri-keen riding his steed exemplifies that perfectly, and I wanted to keep them as a clear focus for the piece. The Sun helps provide a focal point and strong value contrast to the foreground figures. It also enabled me to use a bold rim light, which again helps clarify the complex and interesting forms of the figures.

SO they're ant people rather than crab people... okay. That makes sense in a desert environment... but how do they speak? Are they all males with one very large queen? This is so interesting!

Great, thanks for bringing my apocalyptic vision this much closer to reality. Now how am I going to sleep? :D (Giant, intelligent insects inheriting the desert, etc)

How small of brushes do you use to get the minute detail?

...oh, god, I'm gunna sound like an ignorant yuppie for saying this...

How small is that? ._. I'm sorry, I thought for sure you would go into the description of the brush instead of the technical term. I lack the experience in the art field to know. All I know is, "Big brush, medium brush, little brush, and grandpappy's brush".

Brush sizes run from 000 - very small, to 20 - thick as a finger.

Loving the lighting on this. Great take on the classic horse rearing in the sun image. I msut admit I am getting lost in the tangle of limbs, but that is usually fixed when printed (easier to focus I guess).

Looking foward to the new take on the setting, its been awhile.

cheers

It definitely is. :)
Always good to know that others have the same problems and experiences as oneself.
And you all provide much help. I'm just starting to work with acrylics again and looking for tips there. The podcast, beside your work, Steve Prescott and Wayne Reynolds, is a big inspiration and help for me. :)

Spice must flow...

I've always loved thri-kreen, mostly because of their absurd jump bonus.
