"Harsk really began to wonder why he'd agreed to investigate the mine, especially when he was yet to step foot inside it!"

This is a dramatic cliffhanger moment, and I really wanted to convey that through the composition and palette. Lots of strong lines lead our eye to the point of impact between Harsk and the creatures emerging from the crevasse. This is accentuated by the use of saturated colour set against more muted surroundings.

I have a very extensive walkthough on my blog showing the entire process:

This is a stunning image in every way, right up there with your best stuff! The severed fingers are a nice touch, and the way they're moving is very realistic.

It looks like the Barrow Whites learned how to throw some grappling hooks. Your POV feels very convincing. I can only imagine when those things learn how to wear an oven mitten for armor.

However the ax chopping the fingers is too illustrational and kinda cheesy

I'm just curious, what do you mean exactly by "illustrational"?

When painting an illustration the artist opens up a scene and tells a story.

For example:
(A picture of a battle)
1 - One artist, telling the story, choose to kinda hint on the violence and the blood of the event, leaving the viewer to use imagination and complete the picture in his own head.
2 - Other artist, telling the story, chooses to draw and paint Everything the scene might have in it, with all the details, leaving the viewer to look at what is there and leaving very little to imagination.

And when it boils down to keeping viewers eye as long as possible on your image, leaving things to imagination adds to the experience.
So by "too illustrational" I mean: Too much information was all painted in one image that might distract from the viewer from main story.

Perhaps I am taking too fine art approach to this, yet still think the fingers cutting is a distraction. The image is already strong and fun to look at as it is.
