Runefang

Black Library novel cover; ©Games Workshop

Acrylic, Approx 13" x 20".

Original artwork SOLD.

The mythical sword Runefang is capable of destroying all the enemies of the Empire... and it will need to!

This was painted a little while ago, around the same time as Curse of the Necrarch, but I had failed to post it sooner :(

The composition was dictated to me, but I had fun with portraying the undead, and mass battle scene. I chose a lighter patch of sky and some glint on the blade to add focus to the tip, as I knew the trade dress was going to fall across the middle.

Here it is with the trade dress:

Very cool! I like how you make it first person.

Pleased you like it - the viewpoint and layout of the sword was dictated to me in the brief, but I tried to make it less static by the use of the 2 lead zombies :)

Very well done! I also like the background and landscape.

the level of detail you lavish is just awesome... despite being daubed with blood, the Runefang and the gauntlet really stand out from the rest of the painting..

as always well done although this somehow falls short...

The two zombies bring this to life. Without them, it would merely be a picture of a sword. You turned this in to a live scene full of anticipation. Well done! =D

The sword seems a little stubby and the design of it is very plain, but as you mentioned, that's what the client asked for. I do love your undead... especially the dude in the left foreground with the hat, he's my favorite.

Very cool painting Ralph, I love all the detail in the zombies and how you used the light on the sword. Nice one!

yet another amazing piece mate!
Sorry I didnt comment or critique the last few, busy .....

Anyway, yeah this is a heck of a piece.
Its too bad that the artists arent more of a priority when the books are described..... I could probably find so many artists to study should I know the artist and not have the book.

The blade isnt as reflective as I know your skills are capable of, but I guess with the lettering in the background you wouldn't want to over do it. ^_^

The mountains seem a little odd, or maybe not 'far' enough..... but other than that you have gone and done it again =D
