Shadow Flayer by RalphHorsley Shadow Flayer by RalphHorsley
D&D Miniatures Box Cover; ©Wizards of the Coast

Acrylic, Approx 12.5" x 12.5".

Original artwork SOLD.

The warrior Shadow Flayer stands ready to strike infront of the archway, eager for his next victim...

I was commissioned to provide box cover art for the next set of D&D miniature booster boxes. They are an unusual tetrapak shaope which presented some challenges, and also needed to be clearly readable on the shelf.

I chose the archway to frame the figure, and also had that as a back light source to help bring out the silhouette of the flayer, where the darkest values are also placed.

One of the major inspirations for one of my OCs. I remember searching for a picture of an illithid fighter and was overjoyed when I found this piece.

Sorry I didn't comment before now. This is one awesome artwork!

I remember these things from Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 2...nasty thing this was, but very cool looking. Just wondering do they all talk with a femanine voice?

Really like that each skull has a few holes in it. Wonderful detail. That's one well-fed illithid.
