Description
The Slaying Stone
Dungeons & Dragons supplement cover artwork.
© WOTC; D&D.
Acrylic, Approx 13" x 17".
Original artwork for sale; US $1200
The metallic bark would be the least of the intruder's worries...
As I was tackling a nightime setting having the moon behind the tower was an obviously strong motif to adopt, but potentially this left the lead 'dog' (actually Iron Defenders) in deep shadow. To address this I introduced a sceondary light source coming from 'out of shot'.
This light source allowed me to introduce warmer colours in the foreground, which in turn pulls those elements forward visually and allows the lead figure to pop off the page.
It is a common, but very effective, technique to place cool colours in the bcakground, and warm in the foreground, to help create strong contrast.
