Thousand Thrones by RalphHorsley Thousand Thrones by RalphHorsley
Thousand Thrones
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay cover artwork.

Acrylic, approx 14" x 18"

Black Industries, Games Workshop Ltd.

They had paraded for countless miles, yet still their cracked voices rang out in worshipful song.

This was a recently completed cover for the forthcoming WFRP supplement. I wanted to capture the classic grimy Warhammer feel, and mood.

I choose a palette that ranged form yellow to deep purpley-reds. I felt this was suitably atmospheric. Then to emphasis the focal point of the picture I put a green shade on the palanquin, and also centred the light source here, consequently becoming the lightest part of the picture.

Further details of the book can be found here:

When we saw this in wfrp 3rd edition my mate created a character based off the bloke with the purity seal on his head. Insirational! Well done again!

Funny thing. I finished the game with some friends and it was a good experience. Good work by the way. Looking at the cover returned me to that state of mind to role play every time I went overboard.

I love your works you made for Warhammer Fantasy. I would like to thank you for your good job. This cover picture is one of my favorite followed closely by the cover you made for the awesome WFRPG book "Tome of Corruption". Your work catch up very well the mood and spirit of this universe, dark & grim. It always pleasant to take a book with such nice art work for cover as you made. All the WFRPG fans are glad for that :)

Thanks again

Thanks very much for saying so. I especially enjoy the Warhammer background, and I'd like to think that shows :)

No offense, but I'm slightly confused. Are these people undead or just horribly diseased peasants?

The latter is closest - this is the Warhammer setting, and these are extreme religious flagellants who are on a very long crusade/pilgrimage - GW wanted them to look very messed up!

No, but it is a dark and grim setting - which is why I enjoy illustrating it so much :)

Well if you are a High Elf maybe so - but I am not sure why they would try and persuade you otherwise - the grimness is the fun part :)

I'm the kind of guy who plays "lawful good" paladiny types, and they're trying to convince me the Warhammer setting doesn't punish things like altruism, moderation and goodness. The overall impression I have of the Warhammer franchises is that it's not about whether a thing is good or bad, but just how bad is it. That's pretty discouraging for an optimist like myself.

I don't think the setting punishes those things, but the sense of the world is that Chaos is weedling its way in all the time, and that most humans are vunerable to falling under its sway given the right circumstances. Trying to be someone of principles and 'heroic' character within that setting can be great fun. Indeed most scenarios are about trying to stop those who have been subverted, it is all about holding back the tide of Chaos.

Gawd!! It looks just like the local pilgrimage to the near church except with more skulls, banners and fanatici... ok, with more skulls and banners... :paranoid:...

I'm not overly familiar with the warhammer world, but at first glance i took them for chaos followers with their gloomy and "wheatered" appearance... but after seeing the hammer banner (and the slight hint of the sedan holder's sign... :O) i think i was wrong... ;) Dark looking and awesomely detailed, it has this "unclean zealots" feeling about it that makes it very atmospheric... a pleasure to look! :D

May i ask in which forthcoming book this will be in? At first i thought: tome of salvation, but that's already out, is it not? :)
