Tomb of Horrors

Dungeons & Dragons supplement cover artwork.
© WOTC; D&D.

Acrylic, Approx 13" x 17".

Original artwork for sale; UK£1700.

He fought relentlessly even as he was being dragged to the planes of hell.

This was a challenging image to work on, as a montage was requested showing some iconic features from the original games supplement: The Gargoyle, Paladin, Gaping Maw and red-eyed lich skull in the background.

The lich skull proved a useful device to set symmetrically on the background of the page, with the eyes helping provide a focal point, whilst the other elements could float freely.

The main drama and interest is provided by the falling battle between the Gargoyle and Paladin, with the red rim light helping to pick them out and unify the whole picture.

The pciture can be seen on the supplement cover here:

Oh man, the original tomb of horrors was so player-killingly awesome, I can't wait to see how they updated it for 4e. I hope the sphere of annihilation is still in the statue's mouth. Apparently that was Gygax's favorite part! :D

that was the best module ever in original AD&D... you really did the "feel" of that adventure justice, this is a fantastic piece.
