Zaistor the Vigilant by RalphHorsley Zaistor the Vigilant by RalphHorsley
Aldor Draeni

Acrylic, approx 7" x 10"

World of Warcraft trading card game illustration
©Blizzard Entertainment & Upper Deck.

Original artwork sold.

Issuing a fearsome war cry the Draeni leapt into combat against his overawed foe.

I wanted to try to convey dynamic movement and power. By cropping the image quite close to the right of the figure, whilst conversely leaving negative space behind to his left, I hoped to create tension with the frame, and the sense that the figure is moving out of the space. This movement is further emphasised by the trailing tail, and tabard.

I also chose a low down point of view so that Draeni is above us, imbuing him with more power, and menace.

I'm a veteran World of Warcraft player myself so I enjoy seeing you portray this universe as well. The Terokkar Forest palette is spot on. A tiny bit of criticism this time around - I noticed a comment on the Dreanei being a composed species, and I have to agree - they are a peaceful race, thus a dramatic wrathful portrait with these seems a bit odd. In addition the stairways and stone architecture is similar of the present buildings in Shattrath City, which is a sanctuary for all races in Outland, thus making it an unlikely setting.
The tabard and armor are perfectly executed in my opinion (those hooves are really challenging to get right!). The movement and action feeling is great. Looking forward to see more :)

The setting is actually meant to be Aldor Rise.

I was asked to present a Draeni warrior, and wanted an action pose,, sorry if it doesn't quite match the Draeni feel for you, but glad you like the composition. :)

Aldor Rise is in Shattrath City. :) And no worries, it is indeed a splendid action pose.

Hi Linda - thanks. I am happy you like it. I had fun trying to create a dynamic image, I also used some rim lighting to try to help him ';pop' more.

Although that armor doesn't look very flexible for such a big creature...

A job well done once again Mr. H. The texture and the contrast in tones is just fabulous. The sense of movement is also good, although I myself would have maybe tilted his upper torso a bit more forward to create a lunging effect.

Funny how I feel compelled to find something to crit in your works. It's downright hard most of the time. Maybe it's just because I'm jealous of your great talent. No hard feelings.
