'Despite their fearsome reputation it is a rare traveller who is rewarded with a glimpse of these magnificent creatures.'

I have been wanting to do more landscape studies, and also personal projects, in this picture I managed to realise both ambitions.

The waterfall created a perfect framing device against which to set the silhouette of the Dragon. The Recession into shadows and looser marks help to frame the focal point. plus I really enjoyed painting that water - getting all energetic with my mark making, and enjoying using a couple of different gels. The 'slow-dri blending gel 'enabled the soft glaze of the mistiness, whilst a 'Gloss heavy gel' was used throughout for blending, and in larger quantity for a more impasto effect.

I was inspired by a photograph taken by WVDolphin [link] who takes the coolest waterfall pictures.

Ralph - Water is one of the most difficult things to paint. You did an outstanding job here. Love the greens in your painting, & I'm a sucker for dragons. (I was born in a year of the Dragon.) Big time congrats.
